Victims and survivors of violence will be remembered Oct. 5 during Take Back the Night activities scheduled at UNLV.
Take Back the Night is an annual event celebrated across the nation. It encourages people to remember victims and survivors of violence, while promoting prevention of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Events at UNLV will begin at 5 p.m. at Valerie Pida Plaza and the nearby Alumni Amphitheatre with a resource fair at which campus and community organizations will offer information about their services. Pida Plaza and the amphitheatre are located just north of the Moyer Student Union. Among the groups that will be represented at the fair are shelters serving victims of domestic violence and other social service agencies.
Also during this time, there will be a dramatic interpretation of the Silent Witness Project, symbolically representing Nevada women who have died as a result of domestic violence.
At 7:30 p.m, a march around the academic mall will be held, followed by a rally and candlelight vigil.
The keynote address will be delivered by Tom Santoro, a nationally recognized advocate for the prevention of dating violence. He visits college campuses to speak about the death of his daughter, who was murdered by her abusive boyfriend.
The event is sponsored by UNLV's Jean Nidetch Women's Center, UNLV's Campus Community Development, CSUN, Community Action Against Rape, and the Alexis Park Resort and Spa.
