The next generation of campus housing debuted today on the UNLV campus, as student leaders and officials gathered to dedicate the new Dayton residential complex. The Dayton Complex, the first new residence hall to be constructed at UNLV since the early 1990s, features a dual tower structure with innovative "community spaces" for collaborative study as well as social interaction. A signature central courtyard, marked by shade sails and park bench seating, is designed to provide a special sense of community and a unique "outdoor room" for student residents.
"The Dayton Complex is a great example of the 'Living Learning' experience we strive to offer our students throughout their time at UNLV," said Rebecca Mills, Vice President for Student Life. "We set out to create a true residential community environment, recognizing that interaction with peers on social and academic issues outside the classroom is a critical part of student development. The construction of this complex means that approximately 2,000 students can have the wonderful experience of on-campus living and the personal development experience that entails."
With space for 475 residents, the Dayton Complex adds needed capacity to the fast-growing UNLV campus. The facility offers more than 104,000 square feet of active living space, including a fitness center, computer lab and flexible multi-purpose room. Integrated technology throughout the complex affords such features as keycard security and wireless network access, while study lounges with dramatic Strip and campus views provide unique gathering areas for each floor community.
Environmentally-friendly protected entries, courtyard shade sails and drought tolerant, low water use landscaping also highlight the new facility. The complex was designed by DMJM design and constructed by Clark and Sullivan at a cost of $24 million. Residence halls are bonded with the bond repaid by room fees of residents over time . Construction Consultants served as construction managers on the project.
UNLV President Carol C. Harter joined student Residence Hall Association President Ashley Farrell, Vice President Mills, and Richard Clark, Director of Residence Life for a 10:00 AM ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by student-led tours of the new facility.
