Students at Greenspun Middle School in Henderson will be honored as the state champions in the Nevada Stock Market Simulation contest during an assembly at 9 a.m. May 1 at their school.
Nevada Secretary of State Dean Heller will present the winning students and their teachers with state championship T-shirts and awards.
More than 16,000 high school, middle school, and elementary students in classrooms throughout Nevada participated in the contest. The team contest is designed to teach students about economics, finances, and math.
The top team winner in the elementary division is from McMillan Elementary School. The winning team in the high school division is from Chaparral High School.
Each team started with a hypothetical $100,000 investment and had 10 weeks to buy and sell its stocks in an attempt to maximize its portfolio. Teams were charged commissions on all transactions.
The Nevada Council on Economic Education provides the stock market game for students in grades four through 12. It is administered by the Barbara Schick Center for Economic Education at UNLV and sponsored by the secretary of state's office.
