Covering politics has been the specialty of both of the Robertses and will be the focus of their presentation at UNLV.
Steve Roberts is a columnist, television and radio analyst, author, and college professor. He graduated from Harvard magna cum laude and began his journalism career by joining the New York Times as a research assistant to James "Scotty" Reston, then the newspaper's Washington, D.C., bureau chief. Roberts's career at the Times lasted 25 years and included assignments as bureau chief in both Los Angeles and Athens and as congressional and White House correspondent.
He spent seven years as a senior writer at U.S. News & World Report and today is a contributing editor for the publication.
He appears regularly on CNN's Late Edition, PBS' Washington Week in Review, and the ABC radio network. He also hosts his own show,The Roberts Report, carried worldwide by the Voice of America. Since 1997, he has been the Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University.
Earlier this year, the Robertses published their book, From This Day Forward, an account of their 33-year marriage, as well as other marriages in American history. It immediately became a best-seller.
Together they also write a weekly syndicated newspaper column.
Cokie Roberts is one of the most visible journalists in America today.
She co-anchors the ABC news program, This Week With Sam Donaldson & Cokie Roberts and serves as the network's chief congressional analyst.
The Washington Post said of her,"What makes her such an authority on the strange workings of government? Well, experience, and the fact that she's a walking insider's guide to Washington."
She also serves as a news analyst for National Public Radio where she was the congressional correspondent for more than 10 years.
In her speeches, she reflects on the role of Congress as an effective legislative body, and reviews some of the dramatic events in modern history that have unfolded in the chambers of the House and Senate.
The Barrick Lecture Series, funded through a grant from philanthropist Marjorie Barrick, presents nationally and internationally known speakers from a variety of fields each year at UNLV. The presentations are free and open to the public.
