Seven UNLV faculty members have been selected to receive teaching awards for their outstanding work during the 2000-01 academic year.
Steven Parker, associate professor of political science, received the 2001 Alex G. and Faye Spanos Distinguished Teaching Award. The award carries a $2,000 stipend. Parker has been at UNLV since 1979 and specializes in the field of ecotourism.
Marta Meana, assistant professor of psychology, was selected from faculty members throughout the University and Community College System as the 2001 recipient of the Nevada Regents' Teaching Award. She will receive a $5,000 stipend. Meana specializes in the areas of health psychology, pain, and sexuality. She has been at UNLV since 1997.
The 2001 UNLV Distinguished Teaching Awards were presented to:
Mark Guadagnoli, associate professor of kinesiology;
Deborah Arteaga, associate professor of foreign languages and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts;
Michael Lugering, associate professor of theatre;
Patricia Steubing, a clinical assistant professor of biological sciences; and
Doug Orton, an assistant professor of management.
Each will receive a $5,000 stipend.
Guadagnoli is chair of the department of kinesiology. He has been at UNLV since 1991 and specializes in motor control -- how the brain and spinal cord organize and carry out movements through the muscular system.
Arteaga, who has been at UNLV since 1992, specializes in romance linguistics and the history of the Spanish and French languages.
Lugering, who specializes in acting and directing, serves as the vocal coach for UNLV's theatre productions. He has been at UNLV since 1991.
Steubing specializes in microbiology, immunology, and human biology. She also teaches several K-12 teacher development courses in science and math. She has been at UNLV since 1990.
Orton joined the UNLV management faculty in 1999. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses on how to use strategy formation and implementation processes to increase a company's competitive advantage in today's global marketplace.
