UNLV's Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is hosting a two-day seminar by IP3 Inc., a national firm that provides information security education and research, on Feb. 3-4, from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The workshop will be held at UNLV's Paradise Campus, Room 512, located at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Swenson Street.
"From Strategy to Reality: Managing the Porous Perimeters" will provide attendees with a balance of theory and real-life examples of how IT security systems have been breached. Presenters will also discuss what solutions are now available to prevent it from happening to businesses and organizations in the future.
The cost of the workshop is $795. ISS faculty, students, and affiliated partners of the center are eligible for scholarship funds to attend the workshop.
"IP3 and UNLV's Institute for Security Studies partnership is a perfect fit," said Ken Kousky, CEO of IP3 Inc. "The institute is committed to bringing nationally recognized programs to the local market. They want to ensure that Las Vegas is not overlooked when it comes to providing the community with essential resources to address crucial issues such as homeland security."
Lee Van Arsdale, director of UNLV's Institute for Security Studies, said, "We're very fortunate to host a nationally recognized IT security seminar at our institute. And the fact that we are offering our stakeholders scholarship opportunities to attend is key. The scholarships eliminate a major barrier that prevents a lot of people from attending this type of educational and preparatory workshop."
The workshop will explore the latest critical security information such as the NIST Guidelines to help federal agencies fortify their systems, SANS/FBI Top 20 Vulnerabilities, and the President's National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace. In addition, the workshop addresses the top five IT security challenges identified by corporate security managers: multi-vendor integration, wireless device security, spam, internal theft of intellectual property, and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
"Las Vegas is a strategic security market," Kousky said, "because of the many security issues the gaming industry faces, such as data protection and legislative compliance. In addition, the city's large public events have made the entire community aware of the vital importance of a robust security infrastructure."
Las Vegas is one of 20 cities IP3 will visit during its 2004 national workshop tour.
