Recognizing that social and economic circumstances can often disrupt a college education in progress, UNLV's Jean Nidetch Women's Center is offering a special scholarship to help working adults overcome these challenges and return to school. The Osher Re-entry Scholarship, funded by the Bernard Osher Foundation, provides students returning to college after a break of five years or more with financial, social and academic support.
Under the program, up to ten applicants may be awarded $2500 per semester, or up to $5000 per year if eligibility is maintained. To qualify for the scholarship, students must be formally admitted to UNLV, pursuing their first Bachelor's Degree, enrolled in at least nine credits, have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher and demonstrate compelling personal and financial need. Scholarship applicants must also provide a statement describing personal and professional goals that may be reached or enhanced through educational opportunities.
"The Bernard Osher Foundation has identified such a valuable population for this re-entry scholarship," said Elizabeth Baldizan, Director of the Jean Nidetch Women's Center. "There are so many adult learners who have started their undergraduate degree at an earlier point in life, but needed to stop due to life circumstances. This is an exciting opportunity to offer degree completion at UNLV."
The application deadline for the Osher Reentry Scholarship is June 30, 2006. Application forms may be accessed online at http://womenscenter.unlv.edu by clicking on the Osher Re-entry link.
