UNLV officials have received numerous reports of scam artists who are using the university's name, as well as that of the University Medical Center (UMC), to sell magazines and books.
The door-to-door peddlers, who have been working throughout the Las Vegas valley, are telling prospective customers that they are soliciting magazine subscriptions for their UNLV journalism class or selling books for children at UMC. They claim to be trying to earn a trip to Europe.
UNLV and UMC do not participate in magazine subscription sales. Any collaborative fundraising activity between the two institutions would normally be accompanied by a public announcement and would not include door-to-door solicitation. Anyone who believes they might have been targeted by this scam is encouraged to report the incident to the local authorities.
Individuals interested in making a financial contribution to either institution, or who would like to confirm that their past donations were received, should call the UNLV Foundation at 895-3641 or UMC at 383-2454.
