Dr. Carolyn Sabo, interim dean of UNLV's College of Health Sciences since July 1995, has been named permanent dean, President Carol C. Harter announced today (May 13). The appointment, which follows a national search, becomes effective May 19.
"Carolyn Sabo has been a great asset to our College of Health Sciences, and we are most fortunate to have her assume the deanship," Harter said. "I am very pleased that we have another woman contributing to our academic leadership through the council of deans."
Sabo, who came to UNLV as an assistant professor in the department of nursing in 1984 and was promoted to associate professor in 1990, also served as acting chair of the department of radiological sciences and acting director of the department of physical therapy.
"Dr. Sabo's leadership experience in health-care education and her strong commitment to the programs in UNLV's College of Health Sciences made her the ideal choice for the deanship," Provost Douglas Ferraro said.
Sabo, who received her doctorate from Brigham Young University in 1985, served as coordinator of the graduate nursing program at UNLV, assistant professor of nursing at the University of Utah's College of Nursing, staff nurse and head nurse at the University Medical Center in Salt Lake City, and staff nurse at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City.
"I'm very excited about this opportunity to lead the excellent and very dedicated faculty of the College of Health Sciences in combination with the vision of President Harter and the leadership team she has assembled," Sabo said. "I believe the college of Health Sciences will contribute significantly to UNLV as a premier urban university."
