UNLV will host an exhibit titled "Viva Las Vegas: Survival Research Laboratories Celebrates 25 Years!" from Jan. 12 through Feb. 6 in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery located in the Alta Ham Fine Arts Building on the UNLV campus. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Since its creation in 1978, Survival Research Laboratories (SRL) has been using machines, robots, theatrical props, and other dramatic imagery to stage their unique brand of performance art. According to the organization's founder, Mark Pauline, SRL performances are "sociopolitical satires designed to redirect the techniques and tools of industry, science, and the military away from their typical manifestations in practicality, product, and warfare."
The gallery exhibition will include a selection of several interactive machines, documentary videos, and large-scale images from past SRL performances.
A reception will be held at the gallery Jan. 30 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
The project will conclude Feb. 7 with a live SRL performance at 8 p.m. at the Sam Boyd Stadium, located at 7000 E. Russell Road in Las Vegas. Tickets cost $30 and are available at UNLVtickets.com.
The exhibition, which is being funded in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment of the Arts, was organized by SRL curator Susan Joyce and UNLV art professor Robert Wysocki.
