UNLV's Parking Services office is extending the period in which members of the campus community may purchase reserved parking spaces in the lot next to the new Lied Library, according to Tom Hudak, parking services manager.
Though 200 spaces were available -- 100 to students and 100 to faculty/staff -- only 66 people have requested spaces.
"Although there has been a lot of interest expressed in the creation of a reserved parking lot by faculty, staff, and students, we have had a fairly limited response to our offer," Hudak said. "So far, 45 members of the faculty/staff and 21 students have requested reserved spaces."
As a result, Hudak added, the plan to use the Lied Library lot for reserved parking will proceed but on a relatively small scale for the time being.
"We will continue to accept requests for reserved spaces until the 200 spaces allotted are purchased," he said.
In the meantime, the remaining spaces in the lot that have not been sold will be designated as metered spaces, though conventional parking meters will not be used.
"We are introducing a new type of payment system -- a pay station -- in the Lied Library lot," Hudak said. "The rates will be the same as those required at the parking meters, and instructions for use are provided right on the pay station itself for those who have not previously used this type of device."
Hudak said he believes that despite the limited interest in reserved parking at this time, there will be renewed interest in it at the beginning of the next semester.
"There is always an increased demand for parking at the start of the semester," he said, adding that the demand will be even greater as of December, when construction of the parking garage will result in the loss of 503 spaces in the lot north of the Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall.
