The next presentation in the University Forum lecture series will focus on the biological and clinical aspects of fat cell development.

Biological sciences professor Deborah Hoshizaki, along with Drs. William Evans and Gary Mayman, physicians at the Children's Heart Center in Las Vegas, will discuss the major developments made in the last five years in understanding the molecular and genetic basis of fat-cell physiology. The lecture is set for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Classroom Building Complex, Room A-112.

The trio's presentation will highlight how genetic defects can alter the signaling process between fat cells and the brain and how current understanding of feeding behavior will impact clinical treatment.

In a University Forum lecture set for Oct. 29, Lois Elizabeth Whitney, a member of the Western Shoshone Nation, will discuss "Shoshone, Gender, and Politics." She will analyze the disparity between the powerful role Shoshone women once held -- through which they played an integral part in the tribal decision-making process -- and their role today.

She also will discuss how Shoshone women are finding new ways to regain their political voices. Whitney's lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Flora Dungan Humanities, Room 109.
