The marketing of reggae music in the United States will be the topic of a forum lecture at UNLV on April 1.
During the lecture, titled "From Trenchtown to Babylon: Marketing Early Reggae Music in America," UNLV associate professor of history Jay Coughtry will discuss the failed 20-year campaign to popularize reggae music in the largest music market in the world. Using slides and music, Coughtry will also survey ongoing efforts by the Jamaican government, record companies, and music journalists to establish reggae in the United States.
The lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History. All University Forum lectures are free and open to the public. No reservations are required.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by UNLV's College of Liberal Arts and is underwritten by the Jerry Kalafatis Lodge Charitable Foundation and the UNLV Foundation.
