Longtime Antarctic researcher Margaret (Peg) Rees has been named UNLV's new associate provost for academic budget.
Rees, a professor in the geoscience department, joined the UNLV faculty in 1985.
"Peg Rees brings to the position considerable experience in managing large grants and in facilities development that will give her a running start in dealing with these issues," Provost Douglas P. Ferraro said.
An active researcher, Rees conducted geologic field studies for eight seasons in Antarctica. She also has served on the advisory board for the National Science Foundation Polar Programs. Mt. Rees in Victoria Land, Antarctica, is named for her.
Rees's research has taken her to six continents and has resulted in numerous scientific publications. She is a fellow of the Geological Society of America.
Rees is also a faculty member in the UNLV women's studies program and has been active in campus efforts to recruit and retain women in science and engineering.
She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. At UNLV she has taught a full range of geoscience classes from introductory courses to advanced graduate topics, has served as chair of the department of geoscience, and has supervised numerous graduate theses.
Her appointment will be effective July 1. She will succeed Kenneth Hanlon, who will become the director of the Arnold Shaw Research Center for Popular Music.
