A professor of education in the department of instructional and curricular studies at UNLV has been named dean of the university's College of Education, according to Provost Douglas Ferraro.
John E. Readence will replace Dale Andersen, who stepped down from the post he has held since 1984. Readence, who has been a member of the education faculty at UNLV since 1993, will serve as dean for one year, during which a national search will be conducted to fill the position.
Andersen was recently elected president of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, an organization composed of some 750 colleges, universities, schools, and departments of education. Andersen will remain at UNLV's College of Education. When he finishes his presidency of AACTE in 1998, he will return to full-time teaching at UNLV.
Readence received a Ph.D. in reading education from Arizona State University in 1975, a master of arts degree in guidance and counseling from Ohio State University in 1971, and a bachelor of arts degree in social studies education from Cleveland State University in 1969.
He will assume his new duties July 1.
