Dr. Ray Alden III, former dean of the College of Sciences at UNLV, has been named provost following a national search, President Carol C. Harter announced. He has been serving as interim provost at UNLV since August 2000. The appointment will go forward to the UCCSN board of Regents for its approval.
"In a national search, Dr. Alden emerged as the top candidate in a strong field of applicants for the position," Harter said. "Ray has been doing an excellent job in a demanding position since last August. He has the confidence of our deans and his fellow vice presidents, and I know he will provide extraordinary leadership to the academic side of the university. As a scientist, he has the experience we need in a provost as UNLV develops and pursues its research mission."
Alden has had more than 25 years of professional experience in the areas of aquatic ecology, environmental toxicology, and pollution ecology. He was principal investigator for more than $20 million in research activity.
He has been advisor to more than 40 agencies and has served on numerous regional, national, and international professional panels.
Alden received the bachelor's degree from Stetson University in Deland, Fla., and the Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Florida. Before coming to UNLV he was director of the Applied Marine Research Laboratory and professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
As provost he will be responsible for the university's 14 colleges and libraries.
