The Board of Regents of the University and Community College System of Nevada and UNLV will host a public forum on the new Millennium Scholarship program Oct. 14 on the university campus.
The forum will provide an opportunity for parents, students, and other community members to hear the proposed requirements and conditions for the scholarship program and to provide feedback to the Board of Regents.
The forum at UNLV, one of 10 such gatherings the regents are conducting throughout the state, will take place 6-8 p.m. in Room 201 of the Moyer Student Union.
The Millennium Scholarship Program was created by the state with money it received from a settlement with the tobacco industry. The intent of the program is to provide scholarships of up to $2,500 a year at a Nevada university or $1,250 a year at a Nevada community college to qualified students who are Nevada residents.
Proposals call for students to have a grade average of "B" or better in core curriculum classes and to have been residents of Nevada for at least two years in order to qualify. Students graduating high school on or after May 1, 2000, will be the first group to qualify.
Additional forums on the Millennium Scholarship Program scheduled for Southern Nevada are:
-- 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Cheyenne Campus of the Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN) in Recital Hall 1430 in the Nicholas Horn Performing Arts Center.
