"At Play in the Killing Fields: A Guide to Sex Tourism in Thailand" will be the topic when feminist scholar Lillian S. Robinson speaks at UNLV on Feb 28.
In Thailand, sex is big business; tourism is big business; and sex tourism is very big business, according to Robinson. In her talk, she will discuss everything from girlie bars to international banking and will take an analytical look at the sex tourism phenomenon from a number of angles, including cultural and economic perspectives.
Currently a visiting senior scholar in the Women's Research Institute at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Robinson is one of the founders of women's studies and of feminist criticism in the United States. More recently, she has been involved in the creation of feminist cultural studies.
Her talk at UNLV is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Classroom Building Complex, auditorium A-110. Part of the University Forum lecture series, it is free and open to the public.
Robinson and collaborator Ryan Bishop currently are at work on a book, "Night Market: Thailand in Post-Colonial Sexual Cartographies." She is the author of "Sex, Class, and Culture" and "Monstrous Regiment" and co-author of "Feminist Scholarship: Kindling in the Groves of Academe."
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and underwritten by the UNLV Provost's Office.
