Hans Joas, philosophy professor and former director of the John Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the Free University of Berlin, will visit the UNLV campus March 9 to present a lecture on his research into the nature of values and the relationship between word and deed.
In his presentation titled "Isaiah Berlin, Value Pluralism, and the Limits of Tolerance," Joas will discuss the ideas of philosopher Isaiah Berlin, one of the leading liberal thinkers of the last century, and explain the meaning of the idea of value pluralism and the ways we as a society can seek to overcome the widening gap between what we preach and what we practice.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is set for 1:30 p.m. in the Classroom Building Complex, Building B, Room B-225. Sponsors include the departments of philosophy, history, sociology, and political science.
