Pete Glass, UNLV's program coordinator for Greek Life, received the 2002 Outstanding Greek Adviser of the Year Award at the Western Regional Greek Conference (WRGC), which recently was held in San Francisco.
This award recognizes a paid campus fraternity and sorority adviser who exemplifies Greek ideals, who acts as a positive change agent on his/her campus, and who fosters high ideals in the Greek collegians of the western region and their campus. In addition, he/she offers collegians on their campus and in the western region sustained support for growth and success of the Greek community and serves as an educator and role model for collegiate Greek members.
"Rarely do you meet an individual who can directly affect the course that your life will take," said UNLV Greek student leader Samra Dayani. "Each of us has that one person, the one that we look to for guidance, for direction, and for inspiration. Five years ago, I met that one person, Pete Glass, who will forever have the claim that he affected my college career so profoundly."
Glass accompanied a delegation of 14 undergraduate Greek leaders to the Western Regional Greek Conference, which is one of the four regional conferences held for Interfraternity Councils, Panhellenic Councils, Greek Councils, National Panhellenic Councils, and Multicultural Greek Councils. Glass has been employed at UNLV since August 1996. He received his bachelor's degree in social work from Salisbury State University in 1988 - where he became a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity - and his master's degree in educational leadership from the University of Connecticut in 1990.
He remains involved with his own fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, through which he was recently re-elected as the Province Chi Vice President for University Relations and was selected as the Nevada state coordinator for Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol (GAMMA). Glass also was named Fraternity System Advisor of the Year for 2000 by Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity Headquarters in Indianapolis and received the Order of the Lion in 2000 for devoted and loyal service to Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
Also at the Western Regional Greek Conference, the UNLV delegation received awards for the following:
-- 2002 Alcohol Summit Achievement Award. UNLV was one of only 11 campuses selected over the past two years to host this nationally sponsored and organized weekend initiative. The summit was hosted by the Office of Greek Life and GAMMA (Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol). UNLV was the only campus in the western region receiving this honor and distinction.
-- 2002 Media Award (Published Category). The UNLV Panhellenic received this award recognizing sponsored publications based on creativity, content, style, graphics and overall quality for addressing relevant issues on campus. -- 2002 Multicultural Initiatives Award. The UNLV Panhellenic received this award recognizing collaborative and innovative efforts to promote multiculturalism and unity among diverse Greek and campus communities and advocacy for inclusiveness of all individuals and/or organizations without limitations. The award recognized efforts with the coordination and implementation of the first UNLV Peace Week in 2001 with Multicultural Student Affairs.
