UNLV President David Ashley announced today that Paul Jarley, Ph.D., has been selected as the next dean of the UNLV College of Business. Jarley, who currently serves as senior associate dean in the Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky, will assume his new role at UNLV effective August 1, 2007.
"Paul Jarley is an exceptional choice as our next dean of business," said UNLV President David Ashley. "His extensive administrative experience, high energy and focus on academic excellence make him the ideal person to lead our college to greater heights. He has a clear vision of where we need to go and how to get us there."
"Las Vegas is a dynamic, entrepreneurial community that embraces change and constantly reinvents itself," said Jarley. "The strengths of Las Vegas must become the strengths of the College of Business as we build on the enormous progress made under Dean Flaherty's leadership. Working with all of our stakeholders, we can strengthen our position as a destination of choice for high-achieving faculty, students, and staff, and provide the human capital necessary to drive economic development throughout the region."
As senior associate dean in Gatton College of Business and Economics, Jarley led a number of strategic initiatives, including a comprehensive redesign and reimplementation of the master's in business administration (MBA) program, development of the Project Destiny program to raise the academic and career success of undergraduate students and the Global Scholars program, a honors-style curriculum in international business leadership that attracted high-achieving high school students to the Gatton College. Jarley also assisted in negotiating a contract to bring the Gatton MBA program to students in Athens, Greece and serves as academic director for the College's Center for a Sustainable Aluminum Industry, a Sloan Foundation-supported Industry Studies Center.
Prior to his role as senior associate dean, Jarley served as acting associate dean of academic affairs, and the director of the Center for Labor Education and Research in the Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky. He has served multiple times as a visiting professor at the Groupe ESC-Dijon Bourgogne France and as a visiting Fulbright Research Scholar at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Additionally, Jarley was a department chair and professor in the Department of Management at Louisiana State University and served on the faculty at the University of Iowa. Jarley earned his B.A. in economics and an M.A. in public policy from the University of Michigan and completed his Ph.D. in industrial relations at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Jarley's appointment further solidifies the new academic leadership team at UNLV. In addition to incoming Executive Vice President and Provost Neal Smatresk, deans of law, education, liberal arts, honors, graduate and University colleges will begin this summer.
