UNLV English department lecturer Peter A.R. Kirwan, 81, died Jan. 18, 2002.
He was born Sept. 14, 1921, in London. Educated at Pembroke College in Cambridge, England, he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Navy from 1941-45 where he served in the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean as a specialist in underwater warfare. From 1947-58 he was employed in the import/export business in Calcutta, India. From 1963-69 he served as British Consulate-General in New York where he was responsible for trade and promotion of British consumer products and consumer services.
In 1970, he joined the faculty of Hunter College of the City of New York where he remained until 1994. Upon retiring, he moved to Las Vegas where he taught English at UNLV from 1997 to the present.
He became an American citizen in 2000.
He is survived by Haskell Yett, his companion of 35 years.
