The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents renewed the four-year contract of UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield at its quarterly meeting on March 1.
President Whitfield joined UNLV as its 11th president in August 2020. A student success-focused leader, he is proud to oversee one of the nation’s most diverse universities for undergraduates and one that holds the highest recognition for both research and community engagement.
Highlighting President Whitfield's dedication to advancing the institution's mission of excellence in higher education, Board of Regents chair Amy J. Carvalho expressed the board's confidence in President Whitfield's continued leadership.
"We are proud to renew President Whitfield's contract, recognizing his contributions to UNLV and the broader community,” Chair Carvalho said. “His strategic vision and commitment to excellence align with the values of NSHE, and we look forward to witnessing further advancements under his leadership."
Throughout his first term, President Whitfield demonstrated a commitment to student success and community engagement. During his time as president, graduation rates have increased and he has focused on removing unnecessary roadblocks in student services, optimizing financial aid, and enhancing the enrollment process. Under his leadership, UNLV has made significant strides in various areas, including promoting campus diversity, contributing to economic and workforce development, and fostering interdisciplinary research.
In response to the tragic events of Dec. 6, President Whitfield created a Rebel Recovery Program to help guide the university’s collective response to the Dec. 6 tragedy. The Rebel Recovery program is driven by the notion that safety, security, and well-being are a UNLV priority.
Chancellor Patricia Charlton of NSHE commended President Whitfield for his leadership.
"President Whitfield's leadership has propelled UNLV to new heights, solidifying its position as a premier institution of higher education,” Chancellor Charlton said. “His dedication to student success, community engagement, and innovation has positively impacted the entire university community and beyond."
President Whitfield noted that while he’s honored to continue serving as UNLV’s president, there’s still more work that needs to be done.
“I am incredibly humbled and grateful to have the opportunity to continue leading UNLV. The job is not done, and I am more committed than ever to helping our university move forward on our collective Top Tier strategic plan,” said President Whitfield. “I will continue to champion student success and wellness, foster innovation and research, and grow our reputation locally and nationally, while encouraging a culture of inclusivity, collaboration, and excellence.”
President Whitfield's renewed contract signifies NSHE's confidence in his leadership and dedication to advancing UNLV's mission of excellence in education, research, and community engagement.
