The Rebel Report, a weekly television show produced by UNLV journalism students, is now airing on the City of Las Vegas’ television station, KCLV Channel 2.
The student-run show features UNLV athletics and sports-related news and events throughout Las Vegas. Students recently covered the unveiling of the name and logo for the Vegas Golden Knights National Hockey League franchise, the Manny Pacquiao and Jesse Vargas fight, and interviewed Runnin' Rebels star Eddie Owens. The Rebel Report can also be viewed online and on the UNLV-TV website.
"It's an amazing opportunity for both students and the university to get the show on broadcast television," said Jon Castagnino, a sports journalism professor who oversees the Rebel Report. "Our students are working very hard covering events they haven't had access to in the past.”
Castagnino, a former KVVU Fox 5 sports anchor and reporter, launched The Rebel Report in January. This has been an exciting year for sports and entertainment in Las Vegas and UNLV, Castagnino said. Students have covered championship boxing, stadium plans, NASCAR, UFC, the new NHL franchise, and, of course everything Rebels. Students work all angles of the show from writing to editing to booking guests, filming, reporting, and anchoring.
“The city of Las Vegas is very proud to be running The Rebel Report on KCLV, channel 2,” said Mark Rosenberg, KCLV Cable Station Manager. “I have been impressed with Jon Castagnino, the professionalism from the UNLV students, and the variety of stories you’ll see on this show. The student sports reporters are passionate about telling unique stories that you might not see on the mainstream television stations or in the newspaper. The Rebel Report is a program that not only provides our viewers with an inside look at sports on the campus of UNLV but also gives these journalists an opportunity to showcase their talent right here on KCLV.”
The Rebel Report will tape episodes through the end of the fall 2016 semester and will return in the spring 2017 semester. KCLV airs The Rebel Report at various times throughout the week.
