Author J. Hillis Miller, distinguished professor of English and comparative literature at the University of California, Irvine, will present a lecture titled "The Story of a Kiss" at UNLV May 3.
The lecture, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Classroom Building Complex, Room A-110, is sponsored by UNLV's English department with support from the International Institute of Modern Letters.
Miller will discuss the kiss between the characters Caspar and Isabel in Henry James' "The Portrait of a Lady." He will also discuss philosophical and literary kisses in other works.
Miller, a former president of the Modern Language Association, has authored more than 20 books on 19th and 20th century literary theory. In 2001, his works, "Speech Acts in Literature" and "Others," were published. He previously taught at Johns Hopkins and Yale universities.
