UNLV's student government will present "An Evening with New York Governor George Pataki," as part of its annual Spring Lecture Series at 7:00 p.m. April 28 in the South Gym of the McDermott Physical Education Complex at UNLV.
The event is free and open to the public.
During his presentation, Pataki, a three-term governor and New York's first Republican chief executive, will address current national and world events and offer valuable insight into the role of education in today's rapidly changing social climate. He will also stress the importance of individual responsibility and the changing role of government in America's post-industrial state.
During his tenure as governor, Pataki has enacted stiffer penalties for violent offenders, including Jenna's Law, which effectively ended parole for first-time violent felons; he fought for passage of a strong charter school law, placing New York on the cutting edge of education reform; and he's taken strong positions on tax reform, eventually balancing the state's budget which was more than $8 billion in debt when he arrived.
Pataki emerged on the political scene in 1981 when he was elected the youngest-ever mayor of Peekskill, NY. He was elected to the New York State Senate in 1992, where he chaired the Senate Ethics Committee and was named the "Environmental Champion of the Year," by the League of Conservative Voters Education fund.
UNLVCSUN's lecture series, funded through student fees, brings credible national politicians, filmmakers and dignitaries to UNLV. The lectures are free to students and open to the public.
