The Nevada Institute for Children will receive more than $90,000 from the federal government to help fund a project that will benefit the state's youngest readers.
The $92,500 grant will be used to develop a book for children that will focus on brief historical accounts of life in Nevada. The stories will be based on oral histories that have been collected from Nevada residents who represent a diversity of cultures.
Ultimately, the book will be distributed to youngsters in classrooms throughout the state.
The grant will come from the U.S. Department of Education in October.
The institute, which is based at UNLV, will collaborate on the project with the university's College of Education and the Women's Research Institute of Nevada, as well as the state's 17 school districts.
