An outstanding collection of modern and contemporary art will be on display at UNLV's Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History from Sept. 18 through Nov. 10.
This exhibition, "Communicating America's Vision: The Nevada Bell Collection," will feature works by such well-known artists as Roy Lichtenstein and William Wegman. It is free and open to the public.
The public also is invited to attend a free opening reception, scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Sept. 18.
The exhibit will feature a selection of modern and contemporary works from the corporate collection of SBC Communications Inc., one of the world's leading communications companies and the parent of Nevada Bell. The exhibition, organized by the Carey Ellis Company of Houston, will feature the works of such artists as Charles Sheeler and Robert Rauschenberg. The collection includes works by artists who share an American nationality but celebrate their individual cultural heritage through their art.
The collection was developed over the last 15 years and represents important movements in American art, including realism, modernist abstraction, abstract expressionism, pop art, minimalism, and contemporary postmodernism.
"Communicating America's Vision" will also include an electronic component designed to make the exhibition accessible to audiences of all ages. A computer kiosk will be installed to access a special exhibition-based website inviting visitors to learn more about the artists, artwork, and the collection.
More than 25 artists from the exhibition will be represented on the web site along with biographies and descriptions of the works on display. Additionally, a section of the site will be dedicated to children's gallery games and related family activities that can be done at home after the family has visited the exhibition.
The web site, which will be operational beginning Sept. 10, can be accessed through UNLV's home page, www.unlv.edu or through www.nevadabell.com. Those persons accessing the website through UNLV's home page would click on "museums & galleries" and then click on "Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History."
Children are highly encouraged to visit the exhibition. Nevada Bell will be sponsoring an elementary education program for the Clark County School District through which classroom materials, guided tours, and hands-on activities will be made available to elementary-age students.
The museum will have extended hours during the exhibition. It will be open Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
