Susan Miller, an associate professor in UNLV's special education department since 1991, is the recipient of the 1997-98 Alex G. and Faye Spanos Distinguished Teaching Award.
The annual award carries a $2,000 stipend. To be eligible, faculty members must have won a college teaching award previously. Miller received the Lilly Fong Distinguished Professor Award in UNLV's College of Education in 1996 and the College of Education Research Award in 1993.
She holds a Ph.D. and a master's degree in special education from the University of Florida and a bachelor's degree in sociology/social studies from Florida Southern College.
Miller, who has taught a variety of courses in special education, has authored or co-authored more than 10 books and book chapters, as well as numerous journal articles, on topics ranging from math instruction to teaching students with disabilities.
The Spanos Distinguished Teaching Award was established in 1981 and funded by a $25,000 endowment created by the children of well-known Nevada builder A.G. Spanos and his wife, Faye.
