Former Democratic U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and former Republican Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John Boehner are joining forces to elevate bipartisan policy solutions that can break through partisan gridlock, forge pathways to the middle class and help deliver a sustainable 21st Century workforce across the United States. The two leaders will headline a public forum in Las Vegas focused on a constructive bipartisan dialogue and policy proposals to address the economic, education and demographic divides which threaten to further deteriorate America’s middle class.
Co-chaired by Senator Reid and Speaker Boehner, the MGM Resorts Public Policy Institute at UNLV will hold a Symposium, Investing in America: The Future of Work, April 23 at Las Vegas’s iconic Bellagio Hotel. Bringing together leaders from across the public, private and education sectors, the symposium will address ways to provide workers with the skills needed to adapt in today’s job market and prepare them for the jobs of the future.
Chuck Todd, Moderator of Meet the Press on NBC and host of Meet the Press Daily on MSNBC, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. The event will feature a live, joint interview moderated by Todd with Senator Reid and Speaker Boehner on their personal pathways to work and leadership. Panel discussions will explore the roles and responsibilities of the education system and companies to support continuous learning, and spotlight promising efforts aimed at broadening access to the labor market. The symposium keynote speaker is Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Visit the Institute website at unlv.edu/mgmppi for an event agenda and list of panelists and speakers.

About the Symposium
Over the past several decades, the United States has shifted from a manufacturing-based economy to a knowledge-based economy, triggering disruptions for many occupations, industries and geographies. This has brought change to society. “New in-demand skills and well-paying jobs have risen, others have faded or disappeared, and many more are changing in important and unprecedented ways,” said Jim Murren, Chairman and CEO, MGM Resorts International. “Innovative, targeted strategies are needed to efficiently re-align the workforce with today’s economy.”
“The Institute and this Symposium are addressing one of the preeminent challenges facing our country,” said Institute Co-Chairs Senator Harry Reid and Speaker John Boehner. “We must collectively ask: as the American economy continues to transition, how can the private sector, government, and academia work together to address the future of work?”
“It is our role as educators to rethink the way education is delivered – at every level – to equip students to enter dynamic industries, bridge the skills gap, and build successful careers," said UNLV President Marta Meana. “UNLV and Las Vegas offer an ideal environment to examine the future of work because we exist in a space suited to invent, adapt, and re-invent, and we do so on a strong foundation, with great ambition and steadfast determination.”
