UNLV will host a lecture titled "Sensing Arrays for Chemical Plume Tracking" at 4:45 p.m. Dec. 5 in the Classroom Building Complex, Room A-110 (Koch Auditorium). The event is free and open to the public.
Jiri Janata, professor in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Georgia Institute of Technology, will discuss chemical contaminant movement in water supplies and the use of remote sensing technology to map these processes in the environment. The discussion will also explore the use of robots outfitted with chemical sensors to "survey" contaminated aquifers.
This technology is of great interest to local experts and government personnel due to its potential use in the future monitoring and containment strategies at Yucca Mountain.
The Southern Nevada Section of the American Chemical Society is sponsoring the lecture. A reception with refreshments at 4:15 p.m. will precede the lecture.
