Joseph Lombardo, a former technical consultant for UNLV's National Supercomputing Center for Energy and the Environment, was recently named director of the NSCEE.
A UNLV staff member since 1991, Lombardo initially worked on campus as a supercomputer researcher. He was also the recipient of and principal investigator on multiple grants awarded by Cray Research.
As a technical consultant, Lombardo was responsible for providing assistance to users on NSCEE's high-performance computing systems. He developed workshops on advanced parallel programming and advanced network programming techniques.
He served as interim director of the NSCEE from September 1997 to June 1998. The NSCEE director controls the fiscal, operational, and technical administration of the center.
Lombardo, who currently teaches a course on high performance computing, holds a master's degree from UNLV in computer science and a bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Colorado.
The NSCEE's mission has diversified in the past eight years to address a range of scientific national challenges, according to Lombardo. More than 200 scientific projects of national and international importance, related to global atmospheric modeling and fossil energy research, have been supported by the center, he added.
