"Travels in the Former East Germany" is the topic of the Nov. 19 University Forum lecture.
Craig Walton, a professor of ethics and policy studies at UNLV, will make the slide-illustrated presentation.
As a Fulbright Scholar, Walton spent much of the past year in Jena and in the Thuringen area of Germany. His lecture will take the audience from the homes and hangouts of Luther, Goethe, and Schiller to the lingering ruins of war.
Along with discussion of German reunification, Walton will also explore the country's efforts to regain its standing as a center of culture and progressive thought.
On Nov. 29, Robert DeMott, distinguished professor in the English department at Ohio State University, will present "John Steinbeck: America's Writer."
DeMott is editor of the Library of America's three-volume Steinbeck collection. He will delve into the enduring author's pluralistic view of America, his humanistic concern, and his ecological vision.
UNLV's departments of English and sociology and the Greenspun School of Communication are cosponsoring this lecture.
Both lectures begin at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History. All University Forum lectures are free and open to the public.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and is underwritten by the Lodge Kalafatis Trust and the UNLV Foundation. For more information on the series, call 895-3401 or send an E-mail to: forum@nevada.edu.
