"The Argentine Tango: A Lecture and Demonstration" will be the topic of the Sept. 9 University Forum lecture.
UNLV dance instructors Allyson and Gabriel Manta will examine the evolution of the Argentine Tango dance, music, and lifestyle during this lively and fun lecture. Following the discussion, the Tango Silhouette Ensemble, directed by the Mantas, will demonstrate the various styles of the Tango dance.
The lecture/demonstration begins at 7:30 p.m. in Room 111 of the Alta Ham Fine Arts Building.
On Sept. 12, Virgil Suarez, professor of English at Florida State University, will read from his works of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.
Suarez, the son of a pattern-cutter and seamstress who worked the sweatshops of Havana, Cuba, immigrated to the U.S. when he was 12. He has written frequently about topics such as the immigrant experience, family, and violence in America.
The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural history.
All University forum lectures are free and open to the public.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and is underwritten by The Jerry Kalafatis Lodge Charitable Foundation and the UNLV Foundation.
