The educational benefits of requiring students to own and use computers equipped with wireless network capabilities will be the topic of an Oct. 23 lecture at UNLV.
K.K. Muraleetharan, a professor in the School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science at the University of Oklahoma, will discuss "Anywhere and Anytime Learning: An Experience with Engineering Freshman Using Laptops and a Wireless Network in the Classroom."
During his presentation, Muraleetharan will share the results of a pilot laptop program conducted with 24 engineering students at the University of Oklahoma in 1996. According to Muraleetharan, the wireless network infrastructure of the computers transforms the classrooms, the corridors within the buildings, and even the open spaces between the buildings, into a networked computer laboratory ideally suited for active learning.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by UNLV's Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering. It is set for 3-4 p.m. in the Thomas T. Beam Engineering Complex, Room B-178.
