UNLV's public radio station, KUNV, will celebrate black history month with a series of events at Borders Books the weekend of Feb. 20 - 22.
The events, all of which are open to the public free of charge, will range from jazz performances, to CD signings, to lectures. Events are scheduled for the Borders stores at Lake Mead Drive and Rainbow Boulevard, Sunset Road and Stephanie Street, and Decatur Boulevard and Sahara Avenue.
In conjunction with the weekend-long celebration, Borders will donate 15 percent of all sales to KUNV, 91.5 FM, as long as the buyer presents a special coupon at the time of purchase. Coupons may be obtained at Gameworks and at Einstein Brothers Bagels on Sunset, at the Lakes, and on Maryland Parkway across from UNLV. They also may be obtained on campus at the offices of KUNV, the Rebel Yell student newspaper, and the Moyer Student Union.
Events scheduled for the store at Lake Mead Drive and Rainbow Boulevard are:
-- Feb. 20. 7 - 9 p.m. a performance featuring jazz singer Veronica Morton and an art exhibit by Artistic Impressions.
-- Feb. 21. 7 - 9 p.m. a CD signing by jazz vocalist Marlena Shaw.
-- Feb. 22. Noon - 6 p.m. a KUNV information booth staffed by station disc jockeys. 2-4 p.m. a gospel performance by Faith.
At the Green Valley store on Sunset Road the following events are scheduled:
-- Feb. 20. 8 - 10 p.m. a jazz performance by the Rohn Shead Project.
-- Feb. 21. 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. a KUNV information booth staffed by station disc jockeys. 4 - 6 p.m. a CD signing by jazz singer Jon Lucien. 8 - 10 p.m. a jazz performance by Coalition.
-- Feb. 22. Noon, an art show. 2 - 4 p.m. a performance by jazz saxophonist Gene Redden. 3 - 4 p.m. a talk by KUNV personality and Review-Journal columnist Barbara Robinson on issues concerning the African-American community in Southern Nevada.
Events scheduled for the store at Decatur Boulevard and Sahara Avenue are:
-- Feb. 20. 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. a KUNV information booth staffed by station disc jockeys. 7 - 8 p.m. a discussion of African-American history in Southern Nevada led by Dr. James McMillan. 8 - 10 p.m. a jazz performance by the David Blink Trio.
-- Feb. 21. 6 - 8 p.m. a CD signing by jazz saxophonist Paul Taylor. 8 - 10 p.m. a CD signing by Another Level.
-- Feb. 22. 3 - 4 p.m. Rhythm and Blues Hall of Famer Doris Troy presents the "ABC's of Success."
