On September 1, KUNV 91.5 debuted new evening programming, to be broadcast weekdays from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. KUNV's adult album alternative (AAA) format features a broad, diverse playlist, which tends to appeal to adults as well as the college-age audience. It's a fresh concept for radio that blends classic rock, blues, modern rock, folk, world music, and jazz.
"Many noncommercial stations have been very successful with AAA, and no other Las Vegas station offers this particular format," says KUNV General Manager David Reese. "The night-time radio audience skews younger and this is a format which should appeal to a young audience - both as listeners and as students who may be interested in getting involved with UNLV's radio facility." Reese also believes that developing this format prepares the station for a future in which digital high-definition radio stations will offer multiple channels of programming.
The changes will not alter KUNV's commitment to traditional jazz. The station will remain the only outlet in Las Vegas for classic jazz programming each weekday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. A block of syndicated and locally produced programs will buffer between the two major formats - some focusing on jazz programming and some leaning toward the AAA format. Weekend programming will continue to be an eclectic mix of shows, including Hawaiian, reggae, blues and folk that serve the community's diverse musical tastes.
