Two UNLV students have been named recipients of the 1998 Board of Regents' Scholar Award.
Recipients John Kerrigan and Stacey Devald will receive $5,000 scholarships and will be honored at the Regents' reception at Commencement.
Kerrigan, a Ph.D. candidate in English with an emphasis on modern Irish literature, has earned a 4.0 grade point average during his graduate work and has published two articles on Frank O'Connor, a 20th century short story writer.
In addition, Kerrigan has served as an editorial assistant for "The Ben Jonson Journal" the last two years and has presented papers at two national professional meetings.
A recipient of the Barrick Fellowship, the Graduate Student Association Scholarship, and the Extended Education Award, he also has been elected to the Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society, as well as Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honorary society.
Kerrigan, who was recently appointed as one of two assistant directors of the UNLV Composition Program, volunteers for the Catholic Workers of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Interfaith Hospitality Network.
Stacey Devald, a graduating senior in the Hank Greenspun School of Communication, has maintained a 3.89 grade point average while participating in the UNLV Honors Program.
President of the Collegiate Honors Council, Devald will graduate summa cum laude with both university and department honors. She has received six different scholarships at UNLV, including the College of Urban Affairs Scholarship and the UNLV Alumni Scholarship.
Currently serving as an intern with Nevada Power Co., Devald has volunteered her time with the American Diabetes Association, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, United Way, and Opportunity Village.
In order to be selected for this award, student recipients must have demonstrated academic accomplishment, leadership ability, and service contributions.
