Former U.S. Surgeon General M. Joycelyn Elders will speak at a conference at UNLV on May 11.
Elders will be the keynote speaker at the 4th annual Child Welfare Conference. Her topic will be "Effective Strategies for Promoting Biopsychosocial Health in Children and Families."
The theme of the daylong conference is "Supporting Families in Changing Times." The event is sponsored by the UNLV School of Social Work and by the Social Work Alumni Association.
The conference will take place 8 a.m. -- 5 p.m. in the ballroom of the Moyer Student Union. Elders is scheduled to speak at 8:45 a.m.
Anyone wishing to attend any part of the conference must register. The cost of registration is $35 until April 27 or $40 at the door on the day of the conference. To obtain more information on registration, call the School of Social Work at 895-3311.
In addition to Elders' presentation and numerous workshops, the conference includes an awards luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Verlia Davis Hoggard, director of social services for Clark County, will be presented the 2001 Pacesetter Award. Awards for the Social Work Professional of the Year and the Social Work Student of the Year will be announced at the luncheon.
Dario Herrera, chairman of the Clark County Commission, will be the luncheon keynote speaker.
