"An Inside Look at Politics and Policy" will be the topic when journalist Gloria Borger speaks at UNLV on Dec. 4 as part of the Barrick Lecture Series.
Her presentation is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall. The event is free, but tickets are required. Tickets may be picked up at the Performing Arts Center box office at Ham Concert Hall beginning Nov 11. For more information, call 895-2787.
Borger is a contributing editor for U.S. News and World Report. A member of the publication's staff since 1986, she writes the magazine's "On Politics" column every other week. She also is a special correspondent with CBS News and regularly appears on PBS' "Washington Week in Review."
She began her journalism career as a reporter at the now defunct Washington Star where she won a series of Front Page awards. While there, she also co-authored "Federal Triangle," a spoof about Washington political life.
She eventually switched to news magazines, joining the Washington bureau of Newsweek as a general assignment reporter covering a variety of stories ranging from the nuclear accident at Three-Mile Island to presidential campaigns. Politics soon became her beat, and she was appointed as Newsweek's chief congressional correspondent. From there, she moved to U.S. News and World Report.
Borger has been the recipient of an IBM-sponsored Watson Traveling Fellowship to study the British press.
A 1974 graduate of Colgate University in New York, Borger now is a member of the university's board of trustees.
The Barrick Lecture Series, funded through a grant from philanthropist Marjorie Barrick, presents nationally and internationally known speakers from a variety of fields each year at UNLV. The presentations are free and open to the public.
