"The History of Women in Politics" will be the topic when historian Glenna Matthews speaks at UNLV on Oct. 27.

Matthews' presentation, which is sponsored by the UNLV women's studies program, is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Frank and Estella Beam Hall, Room 242. It is free and open to the public.

She will talk about the success of women candidates in 1992 and will discuss women in politics from a historical perspective.

Matthews teaches at California State University, Hayward, and is associated with the Institute of Urban and Regional Development at the University of California, Berkeley.

She is the author of "The Rise of the Public Woman: Woman's Power and Woman's Place" and the co-author of "Running as a Woman: Gender and Power in American Politics."

Matthews originally was scheduled to speak at UNLV on Oct. 24 as part of the University Forum lecture series, but that speaking engagement was canceled because of a scheduling conflict.
