The UNLV College Democrats will present "A Forum on Unions" at noon Wednesday, Sept. 10, in the campus Alumni Amphitheatre.
The forum, which is designed to raise campus and community awareness of workers' rights and the effectiveness of unions, will include the following speakers:
Glen Arnodo, of the local Culinary Union, speaking about his organization's grassroots efforts, its significance within local government and industry, and the union's impact on last year's election;
Dave Deitrich, of the local Teamster's Union, speaking about his organization's role in the recent national UPS Strike. He was present during the vote on the new Teamster's UPS contract;
State Sen. Joe Neal (D-NLV), a veteran Nevada legislator who has supported and sponsored workers' rights legislation, speaking on the unions' impact on the 1997 Nevada Legislative session and beyond.
The lunchtime event, at which light refreshments will be offered, is free and open to the public. Students are encouraged to attend. A brief question-and-answer session will follow the speakers' presentations.
