UNLV's geoscience department will host an open house to show off its new geology laboratories and equipment noon-4 p.m. Oct. 15. The public is invited.
Visitors will see new, state-of-the-art equipment and facilities in the following labs:
Geographic Information Systems
Electron Microbeam Imaging
Scanning Electron Microscope and Microprobe
Nevada Isotope Geochronology
Soil Characterization
Rock Chemistry and Sample Preparation
Seismograph
Student Computer Lab
These labs have received sophisticated new instruments and equipment with funds provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Science Foundation and its EPSCoR program, and UNLV.
Faculty and students will be on hand to demonstrate and explain the equipment and to present poster displays of current research by faculty and students.
UNLV's geoscience department offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Its 1 faculty members teach 34 undergraduate student majors, plus another 50 students who have declared an interest in majoring in geoscience; 28 master's degree candidates; and three candidates for the Ph.D; as well as students majoring in other fields.
