John Gallagher has been appointed vice president for development at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, according to UNLV President Carol C. Harter. Gallagher will also continue to serve as the executive director of the UNLV Foundation, a position he has held since May 1995.
"John has done a superb ~ob of managing the Foundation's growing assets and staff and has served UNLV extraordinarily well in his nearly five years here. It is appropriate at th~s time to promote him to nce president, given the increasingly complex dut~es associated with his position," Harter said.
"John's extensive development, administrative, and public relations experience has enabled us to increase the effectiveness of UNLV's development efforts and will provide leadership in expanding the development activities of the university," said Don Snyder, chairman of the UNLV Foundation and president of Boyd Gaming Corp. "On behalf of the UNLV Foundation Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to congratulate John on this well-deserved promotion."
Gallagher's academic career spans more than 25 years. Prior to arriving at UNLV he served as vice president for university relations at the University of Puget Sound (UPS) in Tacoma, Wash. Before joining UPS, he was assistant vice president for university relations and director of development at Seattle University.
His development experience began when he founded the department of corporate and foundation relations at St. Martin's College in Olympia, Wash. The shift to development came after nine years as a faculty member in the division of social science, where he was also dean and an associate professor.
Gallagher earned his bachelor's degree from St. Martin's College and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Washington in Seattle. He serves on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity in Las Vegas and on the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education District VII. He was a member of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Leadership Las Vegas class of 1998.
