Five UNLV faculty members were honored by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce earlier this month for their contributions to their professions and to the community.
Sue Fawn Chung, associate professor of history; Thom Reilly, associate professor of social work; Satish Sharma, professor of social work; Robert Tracy, associate dean of the College of Fine Arts; and associate professor of art Mary Warner were among the 18 recipients of the 1999 Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Community Achievement Awards.
Tracy and Warner were chosen for the two arts and entertainment awards, while Sharma and Chung were the two recipients in the education category. Reilly, who recently joined the UNLV faculty on a full-time basis, was one of the people honored in the public services category.
Individuals are nominated by their peers and must answer a series of questions. A panel of judges evaluates the nominees on their career achievements, contributions to their professions and community, creativity, innovation, originality, awards, and honors.
"Each year's awards ceremony offers the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce a new opportunity to acknowledge deserving individuals who have made professional excellence a way of life," said Bob Forbuss, chairman of the chamber's board of trustees.
A portion of the proceeds from the awards banquet, which took place Sept. 11 at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, will be used to fund scholarships for non-traditional students at UNLV.
