Three students from the Las Vegas Academy were declared high school sweepstakes winners in the 2000 Southern Nevada Regional Science and Engineering Fair held last week at UNLV and now will advance to an international competition in Detroit.
Rachel Peterson won first place in the high school sweepstakes category for individual work with her project, "Perceptions of Our World," in which she explored the role of gender and left- or right-brain dominance in the perception of dual-image black and white pictures.
The first-place award in the high school sweepstakes category for a team project was captured by Margo Marie Oliver and Margaret Ain. Their project, "How Does the Medicine Help You?" compared the differences in how parents and children perceived the effect of medications on children with Attention Deficit Disorder or with Attention Hyperactivity Deficit Disorder.
The three teen-agers next will travel to Detroit for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which will take place May 7-13.
Sweepstakes awards also were made for middle and elementary school students.
Winning the elementary division sweepstakes was fourth-grader Kelsey Fitzgerald of Kahre Elementary School, whose project, "Eyes in the Side of Your Head," looked at whether the color of an object affects a person's peripheral vision.
At the middle school level, Megan Dudley of White Middle School, was declared the sweepstakes winner. Her project, which was entered in the eighth-grade physical sciences category, was titled "Do Colors Affect Heat Absorption?" She placed colored cloth under a heat lamp and then used an infrared scanner to determine the exact amount of heat absorbed.
All the sweepstakes winners were awarded trophies for the accomplishment.
The sweepstakes winners were among more than 500 students from kindergarten through high school who competed in the fair at UNLV. Numerous awards were given for all grade levels.
