UNLV President David Ashley announced today that Christine Clark, Ed.D., has been selected as UNLV vice president for diversity and inclusion, effective July 1, 2007.
Clark currently serves as the executive director of the Office of Human Relations Programs (OHRP) at the University of Maryland, the equity compliance and diversity education wing of the Office of the President responsible for developing and supporting practices and programs for faculty, staff, and students that ensure equity and promote diversity in all aspects of campus life. OHRP has been recognized for its outstanding contribution to multicultural education and diversity programming by the White House Initiative on Race, the Ford Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the American Council on Education, among others.
"Christine Clark is a highly accomplished professional and recognized leader in her field, and is a superb choice to guide our diversity and inclusion initiatives at UNLV," said President David Ashley. "Her intellect, energy and firm grasp of both pragmatic and scholarly approaches to diversity make her the ideal person to lead this most critical component of our future."
Clark will serve as Ashley's chief advisor on diversity matters and will be charged with promoting and advancing equity and inclusion initiatives. Additionally, she will provide vision and advice throughout the campus strategic planning process to ensure UNLV's commitment to diversity is integrated into the university's mission, goals and objectives and supported through its policies and procedures. Clark will also serve as a member of the President's Cabinet.
"President Ashley has demonstrated a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion by creating a vice presidential position dedicated solely to multicultural educational issues," said Clark. "I was strongly attracted by the support, at multiple levels of the university, for infusing a social justice perspective into diversity initiatives. I feel very fortunate to have this terrific professional opportunity."
Clark received a B.A. in economics with a minor in geology from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. She earned both a M.Ed. with areas of specialization in cross-cultural counseling and multicultural curriculum development and an Ed.D. with areas of specialization in multicultural/bilingual education, multicultural organizational/community development and urban educational leadership from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
