Less than 24 hours before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, James Douglas Orton, assistant professor in UNLV's department of management, was teaching 65 Pentagon officers about strategic management of crisis situations. During his upcoming lecture, Orton will summarize those lessons and discuss the strategies for improving an organization's ability to manage the unexpected.
On Nov. 25, anthropologist and author Michael Ghiglieri will use excerpts from the journal of George Bradley, one of the explorers who accompanied John Wesley Powell through the Grand Canyon in 1869, to debunk some of the myths about Powell's famous expedition. Much of the research used in Ghiglieri's book, "Through the Grand Canyon with John Wesley Powell: The Secret Journal of George Bradley" was featured prominently in the 1999 PBS documentary, "Lost in the Grand Canyon."
Both lectures will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History. All University Forum lectures are free and open to the public.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and is underwritten by The Jerry Kalafatis Lodge Charitable Foundation and the UNLV Foundation.
