At a special meeting, the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education this morning unanimously approved a recommendation to name the Classroom Building Complex on the UNLV campus in honor of President Carol C. Harter. The naming of this central campus landmark honors Harter's eleven years of service.
The idea to name the Classroom Building Complex, a central hub for lecture halls, offices and classrooms utilized by nearly every UNLV student, was supported by students and championed by Consolidated Students of UNLV (CSUN) President Peter Goatz and Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) President Frederick Krauss. A naming ceremony will take place on UNLV's north field (across from the Barrick Museum of Natural History) on Thursday, May 11 at 3:30 p.m.
"Dr. Harter is our longest serving president, and we felt it was appropriate to recognize her work on behalf of UNLV by naming a permanent structure in her honor," said Krauss. "The Classroom Building Complex is central to everyone's experience on campus. We believe it's a very appropriate landmark to carry Dr. Harter's name."
"We are so pleased that the Board of Regents approved and expedited the decision to name the Carol C. Harter Classroom Building Complex," said Goatz. "It was important to us that current students would be able to be a part of the building naming, and of honoring Dr. Harter before she leaves the presidency."
Constructed in 1994, the Classroom Building Complex serves as a multi-purpose teaching facility, comprised of three separate buildings. Nearly half of the classrooms on campus are located in this complex. Building A of the complex houses four major auditoriums, building B is home to many faculty and administrative offices, and building C serves as the main classroom structure on campus.
UNLV's seventh president, Dr. Carol C. Harter will retire from the presidency on June 30. She will continue to serve UNLV as executive director of the Black Mountain Institute.
