The Center for Urban Partnerships (CUP) at UNLV has appointed nine prominent community members to its Citizens' Advisory Board.

Members of the board include Clark County Manager Thom Reilly; City Councilman Lawrence Weekly; Nevada State Sen. Michael Schneider; Dr. Jerry Cade of University Medical Center; Susie Cram, chief operating officer of Sunrise Hospital; John Lyon of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; Melody Bell of the U.S. Department of Energy; Theresa Malone, member of the Nevada State Board of Education; and Kirby Burgess, director of the Clark County Department of Family and Youth Services.

The board's role is to help build a bridge between the university and the greater community, and to increase community awareness of issues that affect quality of life in Nevada.

The Center for Urban Partnerships is an interdisciplinary, applied research and service center within the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs at UNLV. Under the direction of UNLV professors Lawrence Scheier and Ramona Denby, the center was created to build interdisciplinary university and community partnerships to address contemporary issues facing residents of the Las Vegas Valley. These issues include long-term economic development, crime, homelessness and public health, stewardship of the region's natural resources, and other critical concerns that impact the urban environment.

Martha Watson, dean of the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs, said, "We believe this effort has great potential for stimulating applied research, developing needed programs, and providing a high level of service to the community."
